What can the governance of sport and recreation teach us about the value of inclusivity and diversity?

Over the past decade we have looked to the sport and recreation sector as we focus on high performing teams – and this has included around the board table as it is well recognised that the practices undertaken in this industry can be applied to achieve high performance across other sectors.  And at the same time we also recognise the significant value that diversity of thought adds to the table.  How do we combine lessons from within the sport and recreation sector on performance and align these with the concepts of inclusion and diversity?  Join us for a panel discussion to explore the challenges of embracing the sporting culture and diversity, lessons learned along the way and gain insights into how to drive high performance in the board room.

Sir Michael Jones

Sir Michael Jones was elected to the NZR Board in April 2018. The former All Black played 74 matches between 1987 and 1998, and is a member of the World Rugby Hall of Fame. He received a New Zealand Medal for service to the Pacific Island community in 1997 and was knighted in 2017 for his work in driving economic and social development for Pasifika people in New Zealand, and in the work with youth in NZ. He is Chair of the Village Community and Youth Trust, which provides mentoring, leadership and education support for Pasifika youth in Auckland, and the Pacific Advancement Trust, which has recently established the first Pacific Island Secondary School in New Zealand. Michael has extensive experience in commercial and business sectors and serves on a number of Boards both private sector and at the community level and is Patron for various organisations such as YMCA Auckland.. He also holds the Samoan matai chief titles of Savae and La’auli. Michael is married to Maliena and has three children, Tiare 20, Niko 18 and Levi 9.

Diane Halifax

Diane brings over 20 years of human resource, change management, employment relations, industrial relations and commercial experience, gained in a number of sectors, to the Board table.

As a business owner and director she understands the value of the Board to enable the leadership team to achieve the strategic direction of the organisation.  With a career pathway including consultancy, management and senior executive roles, she is a Chartered Member of HRINZ and a member of the Institute of Directors.  She is currently a Board member for Waikato Rugby Union and RAW – Reclaim Another Women.  She was previously the Deputy Chair of an organisation in the mental health sector.

With a passion for collaborating, connecting and community, Diane loves developing people to be the best version of themselves through support, coaching, mentoring and opportunity.

Kirsten (KP) Patterson

Kirsten Patterson is the Institute of Directors Chief Executive. She is a qualified lawyer, Chartered Fellow of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand, and has extensive governance and leadership experience. She is a strong advocate on diversity issues. Kirsten (known as KP) is Chair of the Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust, a Trustee and Director of the NZ Rugby Foundation, and a member of the Audit and Risk Committee for Te Tumu Paeroa.
